The project consists of training on use of the GIS tools of the ESRI platform supplied to the CTBTO to assist the organization in monitoring compliance with the nuclear test ban.
The CTBTO is an organization of 196 member states that support the nuclear test ban. The purpose of the ban is to prevent development of military nuclear devices, both in countries without atomic technologies and in those with nuclear capability that intend to create more powerful devices. Between 1945 and 1996, the year when the ban came into effect, more than 2,000 nuclear tests took place. Since 1996, three countries have violated the ban and tested nuclear weapons: India and Pakistan in 1998 and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) in 2006, 2009, 2013, 2016 and 2017.
Following an international tender, GeneGIS GI was selected to provide special training on use of the GIS tools on the ESRI platform. GeneGIS GI developed a customized manual to meet the CTBTO’s specific requirements.
After identifying the organization’s objectives (requirements in terms of GIS results, internal processes and work flows), GeneGIS GI designed and developed the training manual. GeneGIS GI also conducted a preliminary assessment of the GIS skills of the training program’s participants and verified the expertise acquired after training was completed with an examination.
The manual created by GeneGIS GI was personalized with specific domain activities based on ESRI ArcGIS Desktop. An analysis of existing data on the diffusion of radionuclides was also conducted. These preliminary activities were followed by an 8-day training course on ArcGIS, with content including an overview of ArcGIS and management of GIS data, data modification in ArcGIS, management of Google Earth images and Kml data in ArcGIS. The course also covered the Arcgis XYZ and Grid Maps datasets from GMT (Generic Mapping Tools), GPS data in ArcGIS and management of 3D and GRID data in ArcGIS, and included specific activities on use of ArcGis scripts and basic ArcGIS Server knowhow.
GeneGIS GI’s GIS expertise together with the wide-ranging experience acquired through its collaboration with other international agencies and bodies enabled it to provide the CTBTO with a training program that went beyond “traditional” training on the ESRI platform.
The important work conducted by the organization, together with the complexity and large number of scenarios in which it operates, meant that specific training was needed on the use of geographical localization tools. GeneGIS GI was able to provide in-depth training, with three of its specialized engineers working from the organization’s headquarters in Vienna.
